Vladimir
remembers, "Between 1972 and 1985 I was actively putting the shot. Several
times I won the Shot Put competitions and was awarded at many international
events in various countries of the world. In 1975 in Athens I began my
victorious road when I became European Juniors champion. During my sports
career I broke more than 20 Ukrainian, USSR and European records both
for juniors and adults. I have shattered the myth about the invincibility
of the American sportsmen in this sport in the world arena. During the
22nd Olympic Games I was lucky to become Olympic Shot Put champion by
sending the 7-kg shot to the distance of 21.35 m. This Olympic record
could not be broken for 16 years - during four Olympic Games!" Then luck turned its back on Vladimir. Vladimir continues, "You would probably imagine that my life was easy and simple. But it was not so. At the beginning of May 1986 I was in Kiev to participate in the parade of the Ukrainian outstanding sportsmen and had no idea what damage the disaster at the Chernobyl atomic power station would bring to my health. Various diseases and even clinical death finally brought me to the operating table. After that I was completely broke, as I had to sell everything to find money for treatments. I went to work in the Far North between 1986 and 1989 trying to improve my finances. I could not even imagine I would have to go through this. But fate had its own way… After the surgery I started gaining weight. My metabolism was unbalanced and I was not feeling well. I was constantly hungry. No weight loss programs could help me out. For 14 years I felt worse with every passing day. But I never lost hope of being back to my normal weight and normal life. I was struggling - and a miracle finally happened."
